Just being facetious, sir. Fans are concerned that, like so many survival horror games, Dead Space 3 will be all action, no scares. With comments from EA and the developers that they’re going for a “broader audience” (Capcom uses the same excuse for Resident Evil), my fears were amplified when the box art for Dead Space 3 resembles EA’s man-on-a-mission covers for Battlefield (and, alternatively, Call of Duty but we’ll stick to bitching about EA products – don’t think anyone’s done that before).
Box art is extremely deliberate – imagery, color, placement; nothing you see is an accident. Someone’s trying to conjure a connection with this artwork to action games in general and that sort of makes me sad. It’s a subtle bid for mass appeal and most people will shrug it off, but it irks the shit out of me when I catch it. Remember the original game’s cover? It was a fucking dismembered hand floating through space. I didn’t look at that cover and think, “Oh, cool, I’m gonna be a badass space marine mowing down everything in sight." No, I thought, "This game’s gonna make me brown my boxers.”
I hope the game’s going to be fantastic. Dead Space really is the last bastion of good survival horror on consoles and I hope nothing I love about it is downplayed to make way for co-op and more action. Best case scenario: I end up only disliking the cover.
